Weiβ Schwarz Cards of the Day: 8th-12th of February

The full Persona 4 Arena spoiler is now out, so check it out if you want to know the full contents of the set. To finish off last week though, they’ve concluded with a Climax combo from the set, that hasn’t yet been seen during the Cards of the Day. Following on from this, the current week has been full of Sword Art Online previews.

Self-proclaimed investigation team, Yu

Disappointed the set doesn't have any more Glasses cards...

Yellow / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «武器 Weapon»

[CONT] When this card is on the Stage, this card’s card name is also treated as [Self-proclaimed investigation team, Protagonist].

[AUTO] [(1)] When this card attacks, if [P-1 Grand Prix begins!] is in your Climax Zone, you may pay the Cost. If you do so, during that turn, this card gains Power +3000, and this card gains the following effect. [[AUTO] You may use this effect up to 1 time per turn. If the damage dealt by this card is cancelled, your opponent takes 1 damage. (This damage can still be cancelled)]

P-1 Grand Prix begins!

Let battle commence!

Yellow / 2 Soul Trigger

[AUTO] When this card is placed in the Climax Zone from your Hand, draw 1 card, then select 1 of your characters, during this turn it gains Power +2000 and Soul +1.

To finish off the Persona 4 Arena previews it seems fitting that we get a Yu Climax combo, who as always counts as Protagonist too. For this combo Yu has the potential to become a pretty powerful character, but should also nearly guarantee you’ll deal 1 damage to your opponent. Just from his own effect he’ll make it to 11,000, but add on the Climax itself and he’ll be 13,000 before even considering supports. This should hopefully mean little can stand before him and survive.

Aside from this, he can also make an excellent game ender, due to his burn effect. If you need a single damage it’s unlikely your opponent will be able to stop Yu, since unless they have 2 Climaxes next to each other, at least 1 damage will get through. Saving Yu and the Climax for the right time could very easily win you games. Although then again, you might often also win without having to use the burn effect anyway.

Changing clothes, Asuna

I'm sensing a theme to the SAO cards...

Yellow / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«アバター Avatar» / «武器 Weapon»

[AUTO] When your other «アバター Avatar» or «ネット Net» character attacks, during that turn, this card gains Power +1000.

To start off a week of Sword Art Online previews we get the return of Asuna, who just like Lisbeth last week has been caught in the middle of changing. Asuna has an effect that you see on plenty of cards, so this is simply the  «アバター Avatar» and «ネット Net» version. I have seen some argue that a simple effect like this is a bit lacklustre for an R though. Her effect means it’s easy to get her to 10,000 Power, assuming she attacks last, meaning she can overpower many Level 2s and start to challenge Level 3s. If you attack with her sooner, because for example you have multiple copies, she should hopefully be at least 9,000, which is still respectable for a 2/1.

Asuna is an easy way for a quick shot of power, but she will of course be less powerful when on the defensive. Another thing you have to consider is that her power is hugely reduced if she has no allies, being weaker than a vanilla, and even with a single ally there are better choices for reaching 9000.

Searching for something, Lisbeth

I'm wondering if her name is really Elizabeth...

Red / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«アバター Avatar» / «武器 Weapon»

[AUTO] [(1)] When this card attacks, if [Desired Warmth] is in the Climax Zone, you may the cost. If you do so, choose up to 2 characters in your Waiting Room and return them to your Hand, discard 1 card from your Hand to the Waiting Room, for that turn this card gains Power +1000.

Lisbeth is one of many Climax combos this week, and can help you salvage lost characters with ease. For a Stock, her Climax combo gets you back 2 characters from your Waiting Room for the price of 1 in Hand, meaning you’ll lose no resources overall. This can easily set you up for the rest of Level 2 and 3, by giving you back powerful cards that have already ended up in the Waiting Room. It also of course lets you dump a useful card to the Waiting Room, such as a Climax if you’re close to Refresh. As a final part of the effect Lisbeth gains 1000 Power, which on top of the Climax itself (which will probably give +1000 as well), should allow you to make up for Lisbeth’s normal stats.

Invitation to her Party, Asuna

Not that sort of party.

Yellow / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 4500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«アバター Avatar» / «武器 Weapon»

[CONT] If you have 3 or more other «アバター Avatar» or «ネット Net» characters, this card gains Power +1000.

[AUTO][(1)] When this card attacks, if [<<Star Splash>>] is in your Climax Zone, you may pay the Cost. If you do so, search your Deck for up to 1 «アバター Avatar» or «ネット Net» character, show it to your opponent and add it to your Hand. Shuffle that Deck.

<<Star Splash>>

Hooray for English attack names!

Yellow / 1 Soul + Bounce Trigger

[CONT] All of your characters gain Power +1000, Soul +1.

To round this set of previews off we get an Asuna Climax combo that allows you to set up for later in the game. Her first effect should usually allow her to reach the standard for a 1/0 vanilla, which means she’ll be useful even if she never gets to use the combo. Sometimes you won’t have enough characters for her to reach this, but this should hopefully be rare. Since she also has the Climax combo this will set her apart from mere vanillas when she gets the chance.

The combo gets you an «アバター Avatar» or «ネット Net» character, which should account for the majority of your Deck. She could be used to merely set up for the next turn, or instead you could get an important card for later in the game, so you no longer need to worry about drawing it. The combo also means you won’t lose a card by playing the Climax, and can keep your resources stable. With multiple copies of Asuna you could even gain extra cards.
