Two weeks ago saw the finale of the Da Capo previews as well as a continuation of the Persona 4 Arena previews. I’m only going to be covering the Monday-Thursday previews though, since even though there was a 4 card preview on the Friday, it was all repeats to tie in with the release of the Da Capo pack.
Frigid style, Erika
Red / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«生徒会 Student Council» / «王族 Royalty»
[ACT] [Put 1 of your characters with [[AUTO] ENCORE [Put 1 Character card from Hand to the Waiting Room]] to Rest] This card gains the following ability for that turn. [[AUTO] When this card’s battle opponent is put to Reverse, you may put that character to the top of the Deck.
Erika has a powerful effect, but it comes with a very restrictive cost. Putting an opponent’s character to the top of their deck is very useful, because not only does it stop their Encore effects, it also allows you to cause 1 extra damage. However needing to Rest your own character with Encore, and specifically the discard a character kind, means it can be quite hard to use this effect without impacting on your attacking capabilities. If I knew the series better I’d be able to judge how many cards the deck has access to with this ability, however I unfortunately don’t. Usually though these kinds of abilities come attached to attacking cards, which you don’t really want to Rest. A few support cards with Encore exist, so maybe Da Capo has one of these? Otherwise, without something like the Flonne or Kanade cards which give global Encore, I’d think it’s quite hard to use Erika.
The Bloodcurdling Beefcake Emperor, Kanji Tatsumi
Red / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 5000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«不良 Delinquent» / «魔法 Magic»
[AUTO] [(1) Put the top 1 card of your Deck to Clock] When [Fists and Bonds] is put in the Climax Border, and this card is in the Center Stage, you may pay the cost. If you do so, choose 1 of your opponent’s Cost 0 or below characters, put it to the Waiting Room, and this card gains Power +3000 for that turn.
Our first Persona 4 Arena card this week is Kanji who comes with a useful Climax combo. The cost is quite heavy, considering it needs both a Climax card and a Stock and you to take damage. However the effect allows you to potentially take out two of your opponent’s cards. The first half of his effect can clear out a Cost 0 card, either allowing you to get rid of an annoying Centre Stage card, or more likely take out a support card. If you take out a support card it could even help your other characters win a battle. The second half of his effect boosts Kanji to 8000 power, meaning he should be able to take down most Level 1 cards, hopefully meaning you take out two cards overall for the cost of 1.
Everyday bunny clothes, Mikoto
Red / Level 1 / Cost 1 / 6500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«新聞 Newspaper» / «愛 Love»
[AUTO] When this card’s battle opponent is put to Reverse, if your Stock has 3 or less cards, you may put that character to the top of the Deck.
Mikoto has the same effect as Erika from earlier, but with a different activation requirement. Getting 3 or less Stock is probably a bit easier than Resting an Encore character, because you don’t need to rely on drawing certain cards. However it does mean you’ll need to be careful with attack order, and would need to manage your Stock carefully to be able to use this card. Unfortunately if you want to save lots of Stock for later, you probably won’t get much out of this card. When you have more than 3 Stock she’ll just be a weaker vanilla, so she could be a liability.
Blue / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 7000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«男装 Crossdressing as Male» / «探偵 Detective»
[CONT] For every 1 of your other «男装 Crossdressing as Male» and «女装 Crossdressing as Female» characters, this card gains Power +500.
[AUTO] [(1)] When this card attacks, if [Breaking Into the Broadcasting Room] is in the Climax Border, you may pay the cost. If you do so, draw 2 cards, choose 1 card from your Hand and put it to the Waiting Room, and this card gains Power +1000 for that turn.
Naoto is a useful card for Crossdressing decks, but also comes with a Climax combo. Her first effect allows her to reach 9000 before considering support, which is 500 above standard for a 2/1. This means if you can maintain your Stage she’ll be quite a cheap and effective attacker. Her Climax combo allows you to dig into your deck, whilst also giving her a slight power boost. Assuming this isn’t a Climax that lets you draw a card you’ll end up with the same number of cards in hand as you started with, but you’ll have 2 fewer cards in your deck. You could also use it as a chance to dump a useful card or Change target to the Waiting Room. The +1000 boost isn’t much, but it could help you win some battles.
Dangerous, do not mix, Suginami and Suginami
Blue / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«新聞 Newspaper» / «オカルト Occult»
[CONT] If your Hand has 6 or more cards, this card gains Power +1500.
This pair of Suginami have a powerful effect, allowing you to reach 1000 over the normal 2/1 standard and they could even go after most 2/2s. However keeping 6 or more cards in your Hand can be quite hard to manage later on in the game, especially if you’re losing. Generally they’ll be most powerful when you’re winning already, and hence they’ll be less needed. When you’ll need them most, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get them to full power though.
Self proclaimed investigation team, Kuma
Blue / Level 1 / Cost 1 / 3500 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«影 Shadow» / «動物 Animal»
[CONT] ASSIST During your opponent’s turn, all of your characters in front of this card gain Power +1000.
[AUTO] When this card is put from Hand to the Stage, look at the top 1 card of your Deck, and put it to the top or bottom of the Deck.
Our first Kuma card from Persona 4 Arena is a support card that helps you defend yourself. A +1000 boost is pretty good for a Level 1 support card, considering this usually has to wait until Level 2. The downside of course is that it only works in your opponent’s turn. This means Kuma will help bolster your defenses when you get attacked, but won’t be any help when you’re going on the offensive.
As a second effect he’s also capable of checking the top of your deck, allowing you to move Climaxes out of the way, or help set up for specific amounts of damage.
Being around “family”, Sakura
Yellow / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 6000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «先生 Teacher»
[AUTO] When this card becomes Reversed in battle, put this card on bottom of your Deck.
Sakura is a powerful Level 1 card, but her effect could come back to haunt you. At 6000 power she beats out the standard for a 1/0 vanilla, and what’s more she doesn’t require any effort on your part to play her to the Stage. However since she ends up on the bottom of your deck once defeated. This means that unless you can shuffle your deck, there’ll be a guaranteed one damage on the bottom of your deck.
The Ultimate Elevator Abomination, Elizabeth
Blue / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 3500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «神 God»
[AUTO] When this card is placed from your Hand to the Stage, reveal the top card of your deck. If the revealed card is a Climax card, put this card in the Waiting Room. (Put the revealed card back where it was.)
[ACT] [(1)] Draw 1 card, and discard 1 card from your Hand to the Waiting Room.
To finish off this week of cards we got a powerful Level 0 Elizabeth. Not only does she have a lot of power for a Level 0, but she also allows you to filter your Hand, and draw cards from your deck.
Her first effect is the detrimental effect required to allow her to have 3500 power, and her 2nd effect on top of that. Usually all it will do it allow you to check the top of your deck and set up for your next attack, or maybe decide if you want to use Elizabeth’s 2nd effect. When it fails though you’ll not only lose Elizabeth, but you’ll know one of your Climaxes is going to end up in Stock. It also means that you’ll be unable to use your other copies of Elizabeth, because they’ll keep on checking the same Climax. Fortunately though you’re much more likely to succeed with this effect than fail.
Her second effect simply allows you to draw 1 and discard 1, for the Cost of 1 Stock. If you don’t want to lose the card Elizabeth just revealed, this could be used to add it to your Hand. Alternatively you could use it to dump things like Change targets to the Waiting Room. You could also just use it to dig for better options if you go further than the checked card or use it on a following turn. Finally it might just be useful as a way to get a Climax out of your Clock.
