3 weeks ago we had the continuation of the Da Capo 10th Anniversary previews, as well as a treat for all the Persona fans out there, with the start of the proper Persona 4 Arena previews. The Persona 4 Arena previews have continued since then, but after the release of the Da Capo cards, their previews have been replaced by Sword Art Online. To catchup on what’s been going on these past three weeks I’m going to split them into individual weeks.
Small mystery, Anzu
Blue / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 3000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «演劇 Theatre»
[CONT] ASSIST All of your characters in front of this card gain Power +X. X is equal to that character’s Level x 500.
[AUTO] [(2)] When this card is put from Hand to the Stage, you may pay the cost. If you do so, search your Deck for up to 1 «魔法 Magic» or «演劇 Theatre» character card, show it to your opponent and add it to Hand. Shuffle that Deck.
Anzu provides Level support, which is always useful, on top of a search ability that can be an aid to «魔法 Magic» or «演劇 Theatre» decks. «魔法 Magic»will provide general support to many Da Capo decks, whilst also being useful for Standard decks, whilst « Theatre» will presumably be useful for Anzu based decks. I would assume she could be very useful for Blue based Da Capo decks.
Siscon Banchou of Steel, Yu Narukmi
Yellow / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 10000 / 2 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «武器 Weapon»
[CONT] When this card is in the Stage, this card’s card came is also treated as [[Steel Sis-con Banchou] Protagonist].
[AUTO] When this card is put from Hand to the Stage, you may put the top 1 card of your Clock to the Waiting Room.
[AUTO] [(1)] When this card’s Level 2 or above battle opponent character is put to Reverse, you may pay the cost. If you do so, search your Deck for up to 1 «魔法 Magic» character card or character card whose card name includes [Nanako], show it to your opponent and add it to Hand. Shuffle that Deck.
Our first P4 Arena card comes in the form of the protagonist Yu, which gives the deck a quite useful game ender. As you would expect he also counts as a ‘Protagonist’ card, allowing him to be used with both the older P4 cards, and P4 The Animation cards. Secondly he comes with a healing effect, as you’ll find on many Level 3s. Yu shines because of his 3rd effect though.
When he defeats a Level 2 or above character he can search for a «魔法 Magic» or [Nanako] character. Not only does this help you to maintain your resources during the late game, but it thins your deck and allows you to set up for bigger plays in the future. I assume most of the [Nanako] cards will work as supports, so they could be used to make Yu even stronger. If you instead opt for «魔法 Magic» you can bolster your attacking force, and for example you could get another copy of Yu, giving you more heal and access to even more cards.
One of thousand
Red / Level 2 / Cost 1 / No Trigger
Choose 1 of your «バナナ Banana» characters in Stand and put it to Rest. If you do so, choose 1 Character card from your Waiting Room, return it to Hand, choose 1 of your characters, and it gains Power +3000 for that turn.
Put this card to Memory.
Our next Da Capo card is an event which helps out your «バナナ Banana» themed decks. I don’t know Da Capo too well, so I’ll just assume this is an attribute that belongs to a specific character, or set of characters, such as the two featured in the picture. It’s presumably a defining characteristic of that character? The potential narrow uses of this card aside it will be very useful for decks that can use it.
Firstly the requirement to Rest a character is usually not too steep, since you can just pick a Back Stage character. The actual effect not only replaces the card with a Character from your Waiting Room, but also gives a character a power boost whilst sending itself to Memory. This means the card has threefold uses. Firstly it lets you pick and choose a card to suit your needs, provided you have one in your Waiting Room. Alternatively you could save up a higher Level card for later. Secondly it can aid you in winning a battle, potentially allowing you to gain one resource up on your opponent without losing any of yours. Finally it can thin your deck for next Refresh.
I wonder how wide ranging the impact of this card would be, but I can really see it helping «バナナ Banana» decks.
Self proclaimed special investigation team, Yosuke
Yellow / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«ジュネス Junes» / «ヘッドフォン Headphone»
[CONT] ASSIST All of your characters in front of this card gains Power +500.
[ACT] [Put this card to Rest] Choose 1 of your «ジュネス Junes» characters, and it gains Power +500 for that turn.
The new Yosuke card is your basic Level 0 Assist card, but he comes with a useful second effect if you’re playing a «ジュネス Junes» deck. On top of the +500 in Front he can also give another «ジュネス Junes» character +500. This can greatly help turn the tide of battle early in the game, and later on can help you keep up with stronger support cards until you get your own.
Practicing romance, Sara
Green / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «スポーツ Sports»
[ACT][Discard a «スポーツ Sports» character from your Hand] For the turn, this card gains Power +3500.
Sara is a simple beater. By giving up a «スポーツ Sports» character she can become 11,500, enough to handle any Level 2, and even some Level 3s. In desperate situations you could even push her higher, but this is usually only a last resort. You’ll hopefully be able to cause an even trade off with her by taking out an opponent’s card, but you’d then be worried about losing Sara on the defense next turn.
She’s probably best saved for defeating big cards.
Strong-minded leg technique Dragon, Satonaka Chie
Green / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 8000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«スポーツ Sports» / «魔法 Magic»
[CONT] If you have 3 or more other «スポーツ Sports» characters this card gains Power +1000.
Likewise Chie is a straightforward card, but not quite as explosive. She should be able to easily reach 9000, putting her at 500 above the 2/1 standard, hopefully allowing her to easily defeat other Cost 1 cards.
Obviously grown-up, Sakura
Yellow / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 7500 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
[AUTO] This ability can activate up to once per turn. When you use an [ACT] ability, this card gains Power +1000 for that turn.
[ACT] [Rest one of your «魔法 Magic» characters] For the turn this card gains Power +1000.
Sakura is yet another 2/1 with the possibility to grow strong for a low cost. She comes with two abilities that can boost her by 1000 each, and what’s more the two interact with each other. Her second effect gives her an extra 1000 power by Resting a «魔法 Magic» character, hopefully Back Stage. This then sets off her first ability giving her a further 1000. This will make her 9500 for little effort, and allow her to defeat most other Level 2 cards. Resting a 2nd character can push her to 10,500, enough to handle some Level 3s. Even if you can’t spare another character to rest you can still use other [ACT] abilities to put her at 8500.
The issue though is that she’s very weak on the defense at only 7500. Thankfully though her first effect means your Counter cards will give her an even bigger boost, hopefully making her a little easier to defend.
Promise to allies, Yukiko
Red / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 2000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«扇子 Folding Fan» / «魔法 Magic»
[ACT] BRAINSTORM [(1) Rest this card] Reveal the top 4 cards of your Deck and put them in the Waiting Room. For each Climax card revealed this way, return up to 1 Character card from your Waiting Room to your hand.
Yukiko provides a break from all the attacking previews with her Brainstorm (Concentration) effect. She has the powerful effect to retrieve characters without worrying about giving up any resources afterwards. Since she has such a strong effect it does of course require you to Rest her, otherwise you could repeatedly use this effect and completely swing the momentum of the game. As always this sort of effect is also useful for thinning the deck, but is of course less good at this aspect compared to the Brainstorm cards you can use repeatedly in one turn.
Session together! Koko
Green / Level 1 / Cost 1 / 6500 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
[CONT] If you have 3 or more other «音楽 Music» characters this card gains Power +1000.
Our first band trio is Koko, who is once again a simple beatstick, but at Level 1 this time. When accompanied by her other «音楽 Music» character she’ll reach 7500, which is 500 above the 1/1 standard. This should hopefully allow her to defeat many other Level 1 cards without too much drawback or trouble on your part.
Session together! Nanaka
Green / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 2000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«音楽 Music» / «魔法 Magic»
[AUTO] [Place 1 card from your Hand on the Clock] When this card is placed in the Waiting Room from the Stage, you may pay the cost. By doing so, you return one «音楽 Music» character from your Clock to your Hand.
Up next we have Nanaka, who has an interesting form of character retrieval. She essentially allows you to swap a card in your Hand for one in your Clock, provided it is «音楽 Music». This can help you get back cards that might otherwise be hard to retrieve, but can also be used to try and fix colour problems that you might have. As you can imagine though, the choices of cards to get will be fairly limited compared to the Deck or Waiting Room. Since she needs to go to the Waiting Room it means you’ll either need to suicide her, or hope your opponent finishes her off whilst still leaving you with decent things to retrieve from the Clock.
Session together! Wataru
Green / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 5000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
[ACT] [Rest one of your «音楽 Music» characters] For the turn this card gains Power +1000.
Like Koko, Wataru is another simple beater, except with no Cost. He should be able to easily make 7000 power, allowing him to challenge some Cost 1 characters. However he’ll be weaker on the opponent’s turn, making it likely he won’t last very long. Even if he’s defeated next turn you’ll at least have managed an even trade off whilst conserving Stock.
Up next we have a whole bunch more Da Capo and Persona 4 Arena cards.
