Card of the Day: Catch up

20 Apr

I’ve been a bit busy for the past week or so, partly due to helping out at a large Yu-Gi-Oh! event in Toulouse over the weekend, and this has meant I’ve fallen quite a way behind on my Card of the Days for Weiβ Schwarz. This means there’s now a massive catch up to do before things get too out of hand. Fortunately one of the cards from last Friday was a repost so it can be ignored.

Hero’s knight, Tabitha

Yellow / Level 2 / Cost 2 / 8500 / 2 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «王族 Royalty»

[C] If your Stock has 4 or less cards, this card gains [[A] ENCORE [Put 1 character card from Hand to the Waiting Room]].

Previously I’d used [“Knight” of the Hero, Tabitha] for the translation of this card’s name. This is the Change target for [Girl Forgiven by Friends, Tabitha], meaning you can play her at Level 1 if you pay the heavy Stock cost. Since it’ll cost you a lot to get this card out a level early it should be easy to bring her out whilst you have 4 or less Stock, turning on her Encore ability. This means not only will she be able to overpower Level 1s whilst on the offensive, she’s also harder to lose whilst on the defensive. Unfortunately she loses some of her usefulness if you can’t keep your Stock low. In addition most decks are able to skip to Level 3 early nowadays, or play a big Level 2 card, meaning once your opponent gets to Level 2 her attack power will no longer be that impressive.

Owner of Symphogear, Tsubasa

Blue / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 10000 / 2 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«音楽 Music» / «武器 Weapon»

[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, choose up to 2 of your characters. They gain Power +1000, Soul +1 for that turn.
[A] When your other «音楽 Music» character attacks, this card gains Power +1000 for that turn.

This Tsubasa card is an offensive Level 3, which doesn’t come with a healing ability. Rather than keeping you in the game longer she makes it easier to defeat the opponent quicker. Her first effect is common to a few non-healing Level 3 cards out there, making it easier to hit for 2 or 3 damage per card, or alternatively with the right set up Side Attack for 1 damage. The power boost can also help you overpower the opponent’s defenses. Her 2nd effect basically means she’ll be a 12000 base when on the offensive, assuming you have two other «音楽 Music» characters. This is very powerful for a Level 3 before even considering support cards. It’s quite likely that on the turn you play her Tsubasa will help wipe out the opponent’s Front Stage.

Owner of Symphogear, Hibiki

Yellow / Level 1 / Cost 1 / 3500 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«音楽 Music»

[C]Assist All Level 2 or above character in front of this card gains power +1000.

[S][Rest your two «音楽 Music» characters] Choose 1 of your characters, during this turn it gains Level +1 and Power +1000.

I’m pretty sure this is the card mentioned here which helps to support other cards in the set. That article should cover the main points of this card.

In the bath, Henrietta

Blue / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 4500 / 1 Soul / No trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «王族 Royalty»

[C] If you have 5 or more cards in your Hand this card gains Power +1000.

[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, look at the top 1 card of your Deck, and put it to the top or bottom of the Deck.

I think this Henrietta card is very good for a cost 0. Firstly if you’re playing sensibly you’ll rarely need to worry about not reaching the conditions for her first effect which would make her the same as a 1/0 vanilla. The bonus of course that she has over a vanilla is that her 2nd effect is very good. Depending on what your current situation is will determine what you want to do with the card you reveal though. Under normal circumstances you’ll want to move a Climax away so it will cancel damage later. However if you have one of the many Concentration effects in this series you can use her effect to increase the chances of those effects being successful. This makes Henrietta ideal for decks with Concentration effects.

Another user, Tiffania

Green / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 10000 / 2 Soul / 1 Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «虚無 Void»

[C] EXPERIENCE For every 1 card with [CONCENTRATION] in your Level, this card gains Power +500.
[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, you may put the top 1 card of your Clock to the Waiting Room.

Tiffania has an unusual type of experience effect, looking for an effect type rather than a Level. This means you don’t need to give up your powerful late game cards just so some of your other cards gain a bonus. They seem to be really pushing Concentration for this set now, so it should be really easy to get at least 1 card in your Level. Any bonus power you get from this effect will be helpful. 1 card means you can beat other 10000s, 2 means you can match cards like [Legendary King of Conquerors, Rider] in battle, whereas with 3 you can overpower them. If you manage the latter a 11500 base is very good considering it has no requirement for anything on the Stage. This would make it very difficult for your opponent to defeat her. As a final note she also comes with the standard healing effect to help keep you in the game.

Since both of these Sara cards work together I’ll cover them both at the same time.

Sportswear, Sara

Level 1 / Cost 0 / 4000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«新聞 Newspaper» / «スポーツ Sports»

[A] When this card attacks, if [First Lesson] is in the Climax Zone, reveal the top 1 card of your Deck. If that card is a «スポーツ Sports» character add it to your Hand.
[A] CHANGE [(1) Put 1 card from your Hand to the Waiting Room, put this card to Memory] At the beginning of your Encore Step, if this card is in Rest, you may pay the cost. If you do so, choose 1 [Big Crisis! Sara] from your Waiting Room and put it in the Border this card was in.

Big crisis! Sara

Blue / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 9000 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«新聞 Newspaper» / «スポーツ Sports»

[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, reveal the top 1 card of your Deck. If that card is a Climax, put this card to Rest. (Put the card back on top of your deck)

I suppose these cards finally explain to me why the Sara cards have the «スポーツ Sports» attribute. Sportswear, Sara is useful for «スポーツ Sports» decks, which I suppose in Da Capo III would be decks based around Sara. In addition she also Changes to the Big crisis! Sara making her very useful. The Climax she combos with is a +2 Soul card meaning that if her effect works she can make up for the fact you’ve lost your Climax card. In addition it means you could Side Attack for a reasonable amount of damage before using the Change ability. Her change cost is pretty small considering it would allow you to play a 9000 attack card during Level 1, the fact she goes to memory is an added bonus that thins your deck for after your Refresh.

Big crisis! Sara is very good for a 2/1. She has the same power level as a 2/2 and only has a minor drawback. If you play her through Sportswear, Sara you won’t even need to worry about this. It’s fairly rare that you’ll reveal a Climax with her effect, so you won’t often need to Rest her. It will be very annoying when it does happen, but I feel it’s a risk worth taking for the power level. Overall I think these cards could make a Sara based Da Capo III deck quite powerful.

Unshaken trust, Louise

Yellow / Level 2 / Cost 1 / 5000 / 1 Soul / 1 Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «虚無 Void»

[C] ASSIST All of your characters in front of this card gain Power +X. X is that character’s Level x 500.
[A] [(1)] When [Summon Servant] is put in your Climax Zone, you may pay the cost. If you do so, search for up to 1 Level 1 or higher «使い魔 Familiar» or «虚無 Void» character from your Deck, show it to your opponent and add it to your Hand. Shuffle that Deck.

For this pair of Louise cards we start off with a Level support card that also comes with a Climax combo. Level support is of course good, and any bonus on top of that is always nice. The Climax combo here is very useful since it’ll allow you to replace the Climax card with a high level «使い魔 Familiar» or «虚無 Void» character. This presumably covers Louise, Saito and Tiffania cards, which makes her effect incredibly useful in decks based around those characters. It’s pretty much essential to play this card in a Louise based deck, because not only is it a powerful card in its own right it also works with the next card.

Noble’s duty, Louise

Yellow / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 10000 / 2 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «虚無 Void»

[C] EXPERIENCE If [Unshaken Trust, Louise] and [Louise of the Holy Land] are in your Level Border, this card in your Hand gains Level -1.
[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, you may put the top 1 card of your Clock to the Waiting Room.

This Louise card is another odd type of Experience card, except this time it’s checking for specific cards rather than effects or Level. The cards in question are the level support above, and the 1/1 vanilla from a few weeks ago. This card is similar to [Summer Festival Nagato] in that it can be played at Level 2. The difference here of course is that it isn’t reliant on your Stage. This means if you get the correct cards set up you don’t need to worry about swarming the stage, however if you fail to get the two cards into the Level Border there’s nothing you can do about it and have to wait until Level 3. The rest is just standard for a Level 3 card with heal and 10000 attack.

If you get the set up right this Louise will be a very powerful card, however you won’t be able to guarantee this every game. She’s not bad if you have to play her normally though.

Robot director, Minatsu

Red / Level 1 / Cost 1/ 6500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«メカ Mecha» / «バナナBanana»

[A] When your other character in battle is put to Reverse, this card gains Power +1000 for that turn.

Minatsu is an interesting card that can be used both offensively and defensively. At 6500 she falls just short of the standard for 1/1 vanillas but she can reach up to 8500 under the right conditions. When attacking you can ram smaller or equal cards into the opponent’s card so Minatsu can get bigger and then take out the largest threat. When on the defensive provided you’ve not already gotten rid of all your other characters she will become the primary target of your opponent’s attacks. If they don’t defeat her first she’ll just get bigger and bigger until they can no longer win. It can be especially annoying for the opponent if you play multiple copies of this card because sooner or later they won’t be able to defeat 1 or 2 of them.

Carefree assistants, Yuzu & Yuuhi

Red / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 5000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«探偵 Detective» / «たとえ話 Allegory»

[C] If your Stock has 3 or less cards, this card gains Power +1500.

If you have low enough stock Yuzu & Yuuhi are very strong at 6500, however this is quite hard to pull off unless you get forced into Level 1 very quickly or throw your stock away. In addition once you’ve played them it’ll only be a couple of attacks before they lose the attack boost. Personally I’m not a fan of these kinds of effects, but I know they can be useful in decks where you can keep your stock low.

Strong bond, Louise

Red / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 2000 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «虚無 Void»

[S] CONCENTRATION [(1) Put this card to Rest] Turn over the top 4 cards of your Deck and put them to the Waiting Room. For every 1 Climax card amongst those cards, choose up to 1 Cost 0 character from your Waiting Room, and put them in separate Borders on the Stage.

This new Louise card is a powerful Concentration card that can compliment the old [Louise of the Void] card. This Louise is easier to successfully use her effect because you send 4 cards instead of 2, however she has a less powerful effect only getting you 1 card per Climax and being restricted to Cost 0 cards. This does open up some powerful combos though. Cost 0 allows you to get both Level 0 cards and the occasional Level 1 card, such as [Girl Forgiven by Friends, Tabitha] who can then Change into [Hero’s knight, Tabitha]. This means that if you can gather enough Stock you can get a Level 2 with Encore out during Level 0 and proceed to beat the opponent down from there. If you get lucky enough to pull this off she can dominate the field all the way until Level 2. Even if you can’t pull this combo off you can still get out Level 1 cards early and use them to control the field.

Wind mage, Tabitha

Yellow / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 2500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «王族 Royalty»

[C] ASSIST All of your characters in front of this card gain Power +500.
[A] When you use [CONCENTRATION], if Climax cards are put to the Waiting Room by it’s effect, choose 1 of your characters. It gains Power +2000 for that turn.

This Tabitha card supports all your many Concentration effects and can get you some very powerful characters on the Stage. Her first effect is just the standard support you’d expect from a Level 0 card, but instead attached to a Level 1. This can be a bit annoying if you want to use support at Level 0 since you need to think about the correct balance of support to attacking cards so you don’t end up with lots of cards incapable of winning a battle.

Her 2nd effect is the much more important effect though, since it means when you get a successful concentration effect (assuming it involves Climax cards) you’ll also get a bonus 2000 attack to one of your cards. This can help you push over opponent’s cards whilst you’re also gaining advantage from your concentration effects. This in turn helps you get rid of your opponents cards and gain even more advantage. If you can gather up lots of the new Zero no Tsukaima cards at once you can pull off some pretty powerful combos, however if you don’t succeed with Concentration you can be left a bit lacking. If you enjoy gambling with your decks it looks like Zero no Tsukaima will definitely be a good choice for you.
