Continuing the Da Capo III / Persona 4: The Animation (P4:TA)theme, today we see our 2nd Aoi card, and our first P4 card that isn’t directly related to Main Character cards. Aoi is a mixed support / attacker, whilst Yousuke has a nice effect, that is unfortunately counterproductive to other P4:TA cards.
Dangos over Flowers, Aoi
Blue / Level 1 / Cost 0 / 4500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«新聞 Newspaper» / «ウェイトレス Waitress»
[A] ENCORE [Put 1 character card from your Hand to the Waiting Room]
[S] [Put 2 of your «新聞 Newspaper» characters to Rest] Choose 1 of your characters, it gains Power +1500 for that turn.
When we got our first Aoi card I wasn’t quite sure why she had the «ウェイトレス Waitress» attribute, but this sort of explains that to me.
First up Aoi has encore, making her harder to kill than normal cards. What this likely means is that you’ll be able to dump a less useful card from your hand in order to keep her around for the following turn, and reuse her other ability.
Her second ability allows you to boost your strength by resting two characters, which will usually be Back Stage, so essentially for free. If used on herself she can become a 6000, which is good for a free card. If boosting her will do no good, either because she has nothing to fight, or the opponent is simply too big for her to handle you can instead give it to someone else to fight instead. A +1500 at any point in the game isn’t something to be scoffed at. This also means that once you’ve reached the point in the game that she’s no longer any good at attacking, so beyond level 1, she can switch to a support role. She’s not as wide ranging as other cards, but bar Level support ones it’s hard to get a +1500 from a single card. Alternatively she can also be played to the Front Stage late game to also work alongside other support cards if you’re staring down a massive wall.
First Comrade, Yousuke
Yellow / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 3500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«ジュネス Junes» / «ヘッドフォン Headphone»
[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, put the top 1 card of your Deck to the Waiting Room. If that card is a Climax, put this card to Stock.
Yousuke is a big beater for the P4:TA deck at the start of the game, but like all cards with over 3000 attack comes with a drawback. Whereas Sharo gives you damage, and Asuka Rests when they fail their effects, Yousuke ends up in Stock. Whilst this does lose you a card, it also gains you 1 stock, which can make up for the fact he won’t have attacked that turn. The only time this will really be annoying is when you really needed him for killing something, but since you’ll rarely be hitting Climaxes with his effect this will not happen very often. It’s also better for the Climax to be in the Waiting Room than potentially stuck in the Stock, although hitting things like Door or Book Triggers can be annoying. I’m not so sure you’d be mixing those cards into a Yellow deck like this though anyway.
Most of the time he’ll just be a 3500 attack card, which will allow him to cause problems for most other Level 0 cards in the game. He will be very useful early game for any P4:TA deck, and could open up later game Yellow options to decks that aren’t Yellow focused. However his Stock gaining ability is counter-productive to the main strategy of the Yellow deck which involves having low Stock.
