Card of the Day: 8th of Feb

Today brings us yet another Sayaka card alongside a new Kyoko card. As pointed out on the Bushiroad blog, whoever it is that chooses the reveals for the card of th day must be fans of these characters / this pairing. Today’s Sayaka is a type of support card I’ve not seen before, whilst Kyoko finally gives us a Red level 3.

Full of smiles, Sayaka

Blue / Level 1 / Cost 1 / 2500 / 1 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger

«魔法 Magic» / «愛 Love»

[C] ASSIST All of your characters in front of this card gain Power +X. X is equal to the number of your characters with [ASSIST] x 500.
[A] ENCORE [Put 1 character from your Hand to the Waiting Room]

Sayaka here seems to be a new type of support card, or at least one I’ve never seen before. Instead of being a set amount or based on a card’s level this card boosts based on the number of characters you have with [ASSIST]. In most situations this will only be two, since it’s very rare for cards to have [ASSIST] that you don’t want to keep Back Stage. This means cards in front of this will gain +1000 from her.

Some possible combinations you might see for this card could be with a 2nd copy of itself, or with a copy of the Kyubey support card. In the former case your characters on the edge of Front Stage will both gain +1000, whilst the character in the centre will gain +2000. In the latter case those in front of Sayaka will gain +1500 whilst the final character will only gain +500. Overall the former situation provides 500 more power, but cuts you off from Kyubey’s [CHANGE] supporting ability.

If you compare this card to the level support cards it will provide better support to level 0 or 1 cards, match at level 2 and under perform at level 3 (assuming you get two Sayaka out). This cards main use it would seem then is to provide support at level 1, where normally you don’t see many boosts above +500. In the long term level support cards are better, but we’ve to see one of those in Madoka. As such we’ll need a wait a little before knowing if this card will see much play or not.

The [ENCORE] ability of this card will probably rarely be used, since you really don’t want to play this card Front Stage, however it can protect you from abilities which can pick off Back Stage cards.

Sakura Kyoko

Red / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 2 Soul / 1 Soul Triger

«魔法 Magic» / «お菓子 Sweets»

[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage or put to the Stage by [CHANGE], you may return 1 «魔法 Magic» character from your Waiting Room to your Hand.
[S] [(1) Put 2 of your characters to Rest] This card gains Power +2000 and the following ability for that turn. [[A] When this card’s battle opponent is put to Reverse, you may put that character to the top of the Deck.]

Kyoko here is the first card revealed that’s the result of a [CHANGE], but we haven’t yet seen the card which can [CHANGE] into this. Instead of healing 1 damage this card instead retrieves a «魔法 Magic» character from your Waiting Room. This can help you rebuild advantage during the late stages of the game, where you might sometimes be running low on cards, or have a crucial character in the Waiting Room. Healing might keep you in the game longer, but this can help you more towards actually winning.

Her 2nd ability is similar to other cards out there, like a Senjougahara card from Bakemonogatari, except it comes at a higher cost. It is however attached to a bigger card, and this card gains more attack points from this ability. Most of the time resting two characters is a minor cost anyway, since you can easily fulfill this with your Back Stage characters, provided they don’t need to be rested for any other effects. Sending a character to the top of the deck is also much more important during the late game than the early/mid game, since by this point damage is usually harder to cause. Guaranteeing your opponent cannot cancel the next 1 damage could win you the game if you only need 1 more damage to win, and have a way of hitting for 1 damage on the following attack.

It’ll be interesting to see which of the level 3s in this set will see use because there’s quite a variety of effects to choose from so far.
