February starts off with yet more Madoka cards from the booster pack, this time bringing us our first Blue level 3, and a search card for the deck.
Blue / Level 3 / Cost 2 / 10000 /2 Soul / 1 Soul Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / «愛 Love»
[C] This card gains Power +500 for every 1 of your other «魔法 Magic» characters.
[A] When this card is put from your Hand to the Stage, you may put the top 1 card of your Clock to the Waiting Room.
[A] When this card is put to Reverse in battle, put this card to Memory.
Our first Blue level 3 is Sayaka, and fortunately it keeps to the character’s colouring scheme (unlike Madoka). Its basic stats are all pretty standard for a level 3, but its effects can make it quite a difficult wall to overcome. Under normal circumstances where you manage to fill your Stage she will have 12000 attack unsupported. Add on two of the Kyubey cards from yesterday and she can reach 13000. If Madoka has level support she could even climb as high as 15000, but it probably won’t be that often you manage to assemble her and 2 level support cards on Stage at the same time. Even if you assume she’ll usually be hovering around the 12000-13000 mark it means the opponent will need to practically always Counter against her in order to stand a chance in battle. If she can hit 15000 it’s probably only things like Fate and Fairy Tail that could regularly stop her, due to their massive counter cards. When defending from your opponent’s attack you can add on your own counters, making her very difficult to break for many decks. I am assuming of course that we’ll get some good Madoka counters.
Her second effect is the standard heal you expect from Level 3 cards and is nothing unusual here.
Her final effect is meant to be as a detriment to her, in order to make it harder to keep on the Stage, since it would be a pain to have to defeat this card repeatedly. Time will tell if there are any other Madoka cards which benefit from having things in the Memory, or if this is nothing but a way to weaken the card. Apparently having this drawback also affords her an extra 500 attack, since another card with basically the same first effect only starts off at 9500. I think this extra boost is probably worth the drawback.
Watching over, Homura
Green / Level 0 / Cost 0 / 2500 / 1 Soul / No Trigger
«魔法 Magic» / « 時間 Time»
[S] CONCENTRATE [(1) Put 2 of your characters to Rest] Flip over the top 4 cards of your Deck to the Waiting Room. For every 1 Climax card amongst those cards, choose up to 1 «魔法 Magic» character from your Deck, show it to your opponent and add it to your Hand. Shuffle your Deck.
Homura here gives the deck a Concentrate/Brainstorm effect in addition to providing the deck with some search power. Usually Concentrate abilities are mainly used for the ability to thin the deck down, rather than the bonus they provide. This is why you see cards like [Xmas Party Kyon’s Sister] in Haruhi decks, even when they play nothing that you can search with it. It’s always better when the ability is useful though, and I feel effects which gain you bonus cards like this are better than the ones that just give stat boosts. Basically for each Climax you flip you can add nearly any card in your deck to your hand (assuming they’re all «魔法 Magic») increasing the number of cards you control. To me this seems like a reasonable trade off for losing a Climax in the process and opening you up to more damage. Obviously though the more Climaxes you hit the more advantage you gain, but also the closer to defeat you get. I imagine in most cases you’d rather not hit more than about 1 Climax, but then again you were likely to trigger the Climaxes anyway when you attack, so it might be better for them to be in the Waiting Room as opposed to being in the stock.
The cost for this card isn’t too heavy, usually just allowing you to Rest support cards, or herself. This will probably be easier to achieve early game, when you don’t have to worry as much about the opponent’s cards bearing down on you, or keeping support cards in Stand so they can use their own abilities that require them to Rest (assuming we see this in Madoka).
